A New Day, A New Job

Tomorrow I start a new job. My philosophy has always been that job satisfaction is based on the following formula: 50% the people you work with and 50% the actual work you do. I really enjoyed the people I worked with, but after completing a graduate degree, I wanted to move in a direction that was more in line with my interests.

Some crazy developments occurred over the last few weeks - the realization that the new commute will be horrendous, along with a very generous counter-offer to stay. However, in the end I think this was the right decision. Just don’t ask about the commute (just kidding)!

Good luck! I drug my husband to the suburbs to live (1.7 miles from MY job). At the time, he was working from home, so no commuting problems. He recently took a new job, though, that takes about 45 minutes to get about 25 miles. The instant he accepted the offer, my first thought was that he was going to hate me for making him live out here. Our old place was less than 2 miles from his new job.

My job had been 45 minutes to an hour to go 25 miles. Now it’s 1.5 hours to go 40+ miles each way! Needless to say, I will likely embrace books on tape :)

I strongly recommend The Great Courses series for long commutes. (Mine is 45 minutes each way, every day.) Good college-level courses on a myriad of topics. If you stick with the “on sale” courses, you won’t end up spending too much. If you want to borrow some of mine, and can figure out how to get them down to you, I’d be happy to lend, bro.
